Flamin' Hot was designed as a seasoning first and a product second. It went onto several Frito-Lay shapes at once in 1990 instead of starting on one, which is why the same red powder turns up on things that have nothing else in common. Extra is the second tier of it. The chilli isn't the whole story. Citric acid is the other half of the seasoning, and the sourness arrives before the heat does. The first chip reads as sharp and the fourth reads as hot. The purple bag is the giveaway. Flamin' Hot products use it across the range whatever's inside, so the colour carries more information than the flavour name does. 163g.
