Chunky removes the thing that defines a KitKat. There's one finger instead of four, no groove and nothing to snap along, so a bar built entirely around sharing becomes a bar for one person. The proportions shift with it. A thicker finger means more wafer relative to coating, which makes it drier and less sweet than the four finger, and the coating has to be applied heavier to hold a single block together. It arrived in 1999 and has since carried most of the brand's flavour experiments, largely because a single thick bar has room for inclusions that a thin finger doesn't.
