Dropping the shell changes the product completely. What's left is a gelatine-set gummy carrying Skittles flavours, so the crack at the start is gone and the chew begins immediately. Gummies also hold flavour differently. A gelatine matrix releases aromatics slowly as it warms and dissolves in the mouth, where a panned shell dissolves fast and delivers everything at once. The shape survives the change. They're still moulded as flat discs with the letter stamped on them, which is most of what identifies them at a glance. Stamping a soft sweet is harder than stamping a hard shell, since a gummy relaxes after it leaves the mould and a shallow impression can close up before it sets.
