Subway spent years arguing that the SubDog is a sandwich, and the build is the argument: a DON hot dog sausage in freshly baked Subway bread, dressed the way a sub gets dressed rather than the way a hot dog usually does. It started as an April Fool's joke in 2022, and enough people asked for it that Subway made it real across Australia and New Zealand. The Loaded range runs three ways. The Original takes melted mozzarella, tomato sauce, a tangy mustard and jalapeños. The Mexican piles on Doritos Cheese Supreme, avocado, Mexican salsa, jalapeños, capsicum and red onion. The BBQ Bacon puts smoky bacon and a BBQ sauce with pineapple and red onion, which lands it somewhere near a Hawaiian pizza with a sausage through the middle. Mozzarella across all three is the giveaway. A hot dog would take American cheese or a cheese sauce, and mozzarella is what Subway melts on everything else, so the sausage is being fitted into the existing menu rather than the menu being rebuilt around the sausage. It comes as a Six-Inch or a Footlong and takes the same toppings as any other sub.
