Beetroot on pizza is unusual outside Australia and New Zealand, where it turns up on burgers as standard. Here it sits on a 396g wood fired base made in the Friuli region of Italy, with goat's cheese, mozzarella, red onion, garlic sauce and marinated tomatoes. The combination works on contrast. Beetroot is earthy and sweet, goat's cheese is sharp and salty, and the garlic sauce underneath does the job tomato usually does. Marinated tomatoes add acidity in concentrated spots rather than across the whole base. It's the most adventurous pizza in the Specially Selected line and the least like anything else in the Aldi freezer. Six ingredients above the base is a lot for a frozen pizza, and the result is closer to something from a menu than from a supermarket.
