Banana is a divisive flavour in ice cream and one of the few that people either seek out or avoid entirely, with very little middle ground. It works better frozen than most fruit. Banana is starchy rather than watery, so it doesn't throw ice crystals the way strawberry or melon do, and it freezes into something genuinely creamy on its own. That property is why it turns up so often as the base of dairy-free frozen desserts. Chocolate and caramel are the usual partners, both borrowed from the banana split, and both sweet enough to sit alongside the fruit rather than cutting through it. The name and the pack are pitched at children rather than at the rest of the Gianni's tub range.
