Two ingredients on the subtitle and no swirl, which makes this the plainest thing the brand sells and the one with nowhere to hide. The brownies come from Greyston Bakery in Yonkers, a business that hires without interviews or background checks: names go on a list and the next one up gets the job. Ben & Jerry's has bought from them since the late 1980s. A brownie holds up frozen because there's a lot of sugar dissolved in not much water, which keeps that water from setting solid, and enough fat and little enough flour that the crumb stays soft. Against a chocolate base the pieces have to be darker and denser than what surrounds them to register at all.
