Onion Flowers

What is it?

Whole onions are cut into a flower pattern, dipped in a vegan batter made with wheat flour, rice flour, modified cornstarch, garlic powder, sea salt, and white pepper, then frozen after an initial fry. Each onion stays in one piece, so the layers open up as it cooks. At 10.58 ounces per box, these are meant to go straight from frozen into an air fryer or conventional oven. The rice flour and cornstarch give the coating a lighter, crisper crust than a plain wheat batter, and the pull-apart petals keep the onion structure intact. Among Trader Joe’s frozen appetizers, it’s one of the more format-driven ones.
