McDonald’s fries in Australia, served in a cardboard boat and covered with hot, thick gravy, were a limited fast-food side built from two very familiar things. The fries are the standard thin, skinless style, while the gravy is glossy, savoury and loose enough to soak into the chips as they sit. There’s no cheese sauce, bacon or other topping here, just fries and gravy. As the gravy settles, the chips at the bottom soften while the top ones stay crisper for longer. Discontinued in 2021, they sat apart from the rest of the Macca’s fries lineup by turning a takeaway-shop staple into a menu item.
