Beetroot is the part that sets this burger apart from the chain's standard lineup, bringing a sweet, earthy note and plenty of colour to the centre of a sesame seed bun loaded with a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, mustard and ketchup. It first showed up in Australia in the 1990s as a local take on a classic burger format. Compared with the regular hamburger or cheeseburger in McDonald's lineup, it's bigger, messier and more assembled around that beetroot layer, which is the bit most people remember.
